Good to Great
Jim Collins has written one of those rare management books
that are simple, jargon-free and actually make sense. "Good to Great" attempts to
decode why certain companies make the transition from merely good to
best-in-class, great companies that beat the stock market several times over,
when their peers stumble and fumble and bumble along. While the material is
based on several man-years of research, it is presented in an easy format that
can only be the result of absolute clarity in what the research team was trying
to communicate.

PS: It is a different story that some of the companies that transitioned from good to great are no longer so great, read Stephen D. Levitt's review here. My take is, such business books aren't meant to be true for eternity, they can't be. Their limited purpose is to show us a set of basic principles that worked at a certain point in time. If there was a DIY manual, every company would be off the charts, wouldn't it?
